Partway through our first Luxury Library build, we’re tackling the ultimate gothic icon: Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. In this episode, I’m smoothing and finishing the text block, colouring the edges, and building a cover design that’s all eyes—literally. We’ll sculpt the Monster’s gaze into the boards, prep a title panel, and get the structure ready for leather and (finally) gold tooling.
If you’re learning traditional bookbinding—or you just love watching a classic become a “worthy of the icon” edition—this one is a satisfying, slightly chaotic step forward.
What you’ll see in this build
Sanding the text block edges (why I start around ~400 grit and work up to 800/1000 for a clean finish)
Edge colouring (why student-grade watercolours can disappoint, and what tends to adhere better)
Cover layout mapping (placing the focal point and leaving breathing room on the board)
Carving/sculpting the Monster’s face using a Dremel (plus dust/safety notes)
Hollow spine construction (why I changed my mind and chose longevity over simplicity)
Bookmark + head/tailband alignment (and a bold ribbon colour combo that… might just work)
Boards on, hinge gap set, false bands built (measuring, trimming, checking for square, and fixing tiny misalignments before leather)
Tools & materials mentioned:
Sandpaper (400 → 800/1000 grit range)
Watercolour vs acrylic paint for edge colour
Greyboard + scrap board for structural builds
Rotary tool / grinder wheel (ventilation strongly recommended)
Glue + brush (and the sadness of a hardened brush tip)
Ribbon bookmark, headbands/tailbands, clamps/vice, ruler, knife
Build note:
This project is as much about craft as it is about theme: creation, responsibility, abandonment, empathy—questions Mary Shelley bakes into the story that still feel painfully modern (yes, I even wander into AI and genetics for a moment).
