This video explores why the clinical field developed a deep caution around somatic work. In the next episode, I’ll explore how modern somatic therapies learned to work with the body ethically, slowly, and with care

Vitality. Ease. Joy. A body that can rest, breathe, and connect.
These are hallmarks of mental health, and yet, for much of history, the body was seen as the problem.
Before therapy learned to talk, it worked directly on the body. And much of what was done in the name of “sanity” caused profound harm: restraints, cold water immersion, rotational chairs, bleeding, and later, lobotomies.
In this video, I explore the early history of body-based approaches to mental health—and why the clinical field developed a deep fear of somatic work and touch. From Bedlam to Freud, from transference scandals to ethical overcorrection, this is the story of how the body became a Pandora’s box in psychotherapy.
This is not an argument against somatic therapy.
It’s an argument for understanding why it had to grow up.
In the next video, we’ll explore how modern somatic approaches emerged, grounded in neuroscience, regulation, and ethics, and how the body cautiously returned to the therapeutic room.
