Nikephoros I was the Byzantine emperor from 802 to 811, after serving the previous empress Irene and usurping her throne. Remembered for heavy taxation and confiscation of property, the emperor met his demise during his campaign in Bulgaria against Khan Krum. The campaign ended with the destruction of the Byzantine army. During the battle, Nikephoros met his end, and according to the sources that talk of his demise, his skull was used as a drinking cup by Krum (though the story is not confirmed by any other sources).
The video is made from an excerpt from the Chronicle of 811, which supplies a vivid account of the expedition. It probably relies on oral testimony and personal recollection alone. The author may have been a survivor of the debacle, although the exact context and date of its composition are debated by historians.
