The new convertible top for our 1964 Triumph TR4 gets one step closer to “done” this week with the addition of a fresh set of Moss Motors hood frame webbing straps! The hood bows on our car did not have straps when we got it, so where exactly do these things go? Time to figure it out!
Positioning the hood frame straps correctly is critical to a tight fitting top. Without an old set of straps to measure, the bows must be carefully aligned using clues from the frame and top. Our method starts by fixing the front edge of the convertible top by installing the two corner snaps, then pulling everything tight to align the frame bows. Once one side is set, we use that strap to mark the second strap to ensure both sides are perfectly even.
This video is part of our Triumph TR4 DIY convertible top installation series. We are installing a Robbins Stayfast Canvas top from Moss Motors (part number 640-061). The soft fabric of this top has a more luxurious look than vinyl, is more resistant to UV, and does not stiffen up at low temperatures. The 40 gauge rear window is clear (much nicer than our nasty old top) and resists scratching and damage from UV. TR4 soft tops feature a fairly unique design, so not many instructions exist for the home mechanic. Hopefully these videos will be a helpful how-to reference for future restorers!
