The Colt Shooting Master is a 6-shot revolver that was brought onto the market by the Colt company in Hartford , Connecticut , USA as part of the series of large-framed Colt New Service revolvers manufactured from 1898 to 1944 in various calibers as a weapon for sport shooters.
Production of the Shooting Masters began in the late 1920s and ended in 1941 when the United States entered World War II. The serial numbers of these revolvers are in the New Service number range between 328,000 and 350,000, the number of weapons of this type manufactured is unknown.
The Shooting Master is a refined version of the New Service Target Revolver. The parts of his lock were individually fitted and honed before assembly , the frame is matte at the top and in the area around the cock to avoid light reflections. All Colt Shooting Masters were burnished as standard , they were only 6 inch- barrels shipped. The barrel is labeled SHOOTING MASTER (plus caliber) on the left. The front and back of the grip frame and the trigger are ribbed. The rooster spur has a widened thumb rest, which can also be one-sided, left or right. The visor, which is attached to the housing frame, which is flat at the top, can be adjusted laterally with a screw attached to the right and the front sight is adjustable in height.
The Shooting Master was Colt’s top of the line revolver and were hand fitted and polished for a smooth double action and single action. Each gun was hand built by the best assembler that Colt employed. It is said that if a Colt Shooting Master was returned to the factory for correction in workmanship, then the assembler responsible for that assembly operation would repair it on his own time before going home!
