U.S. President Donald Trump announced on July 14 a sharp policy shift on the Ukraine conflict, pledging to send a first wave of missiles and other weapons to support Kyiv—paid for by NATO member countries. The announcement came during a press briefing with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the White House.
Trump said that Russia has 50 days to reach a ceasefire agreement or face heavy U.S.-led sanctions, including 100% tariffs and secondary sanctions on countries continuing to buy Russian oil. Trump, who has long been hesitant to escalate pressure on Moscow, said he became frustrated with President Vladimir Putin's refusal to negotiate seriously.
The NATO-backed arms package marks a key shift in U.S. support for Ukraine, aligning Trump's administration more closely with NATO allies such as Germany, the Netherlands, Canada, Sweden, and others who will co-finance the defense aid.
Rutte said more arms deliveries would follow, coordinated through NATO systems based on Ukraine’s evolving battlefield needs. The move allows Trump to assert a tougher stance against Russia without placing the full financial burden on the U.S.
