Abu Trica has been the subject of an ongoing U.S. extradition request after authorities in the United States alleged he led a sophisticated international scheme involving romance fraud and cybercrime, reportedly targeting elderly U.S. victims and allegedly defrauding them of about $8 million.
Ghana’s Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) led the arrest in coordination with the FBI, INTERPOL and other law enforcement partners.
Withdrawal of Charges Against Two Co-Accused
The State informed the court that it was withdrawing charges against Lord Eshun and Bernard Aidoo, saying there was no evidence to continue the case against them.
However, the presiding judge declined the State’s request to formally drop or discontinue the charge sheet against the two co-accused, resulting in a legal stalemate.
One defence lawyer even described the situation metaphorically: “We have met Pontius Pilate in court today” — highlighting judicial hesitation in granting the State’s withdrawal.
2. Defence Argument
Lawyers for Abu Trica argued that, since the alleged co-conspirators were no longer before the court, the conspiracy counts against him could not legally stand — asserting that it’s not possible to prove a conspiracy without other members present.
3. Prosecution Argument
The Attorney-General’s Department opposed immediate discharge, explaining that Abu Trica is not on trial in Ghana under local criminal law but is before the court under the Extradition Act for committal proceedings based on the U.S. request.
The State also noted there was a motion to stay proceedings already filed, which the court needed to consider.
4. Court Decision
The court declined to discharge Abu Trica or the others outright and adjourned the matter, setting February 7, 2026 at 11:30 a.m. for the judge’s ruling on the legal motions and future of the extradition process.
