Battalion Chief Darren Imlay from the St George Fire Department came to talk to the Southwest Utah Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) volunteers about Home Fire Safety. He gave us some great suggestions (listed below) for keeping our homes safe. TO LEARN MORE ABOUT MRC, visit: swuhealth.org/swumrc
▪ Fire Extinguisher in your Kitchen (Be sure to shake it now and then and check the gauge to be sure it's charged.)
▪ Be sure you have Smoke/CO2 detectors in your home, and check them twice a year to be sure they're still functioning. (https://le.utah.gov/xcode/Title17/Cha...)
▪ Lots of fires started with batteries. (Charging them and leaving them, may get them too hot and ignite. We have batteries for everything these days, toys, cars, and yard equipment. Just be sure not to leave them charging for long periods of time.)
▪ Heat detector in your garage. (Not connected to your home fire detectors. Most homes have a thicker drywall in their garages. When you cut a hatch for attic access, you create an access. Use a fire rated access panel to restore that shield.)
▪ Be careful about burning weeds and debris around home. (It can get into the walls. Pull weeds and debris away from your walls before you burn.)
▪ Don't leave your bathroom circulation fans running for long periods. (And, be sure they are off when you leave the house. They collect dust and can ignite if they get too hot.)
▪ Candles and cats don't mix well.
▪ Anything with mineral spirits should be dried out before being put in a metal can outside of your home or garage.
▪ You can have gasoline or propane stored in an airtight container in your garage, but an outside shed (away from the home) is better.
▪ After you mow the lawn and put the clippings in the garbage can, be sure to let it dry out. (Don't throw other trash on top of it and leaving the lid open will help prevent combustion.)
▪ Do not plug portable heaters and other heating implements into an extension cord.
▪ Do not overload outlets. (If you keep having breakers pop, be sure to get an electrician in to check it out. Don't keep resetting it.)
▪ Have your A/C unit and other appliances checked regularly.
