STORYLINE:
Rio's Carnival was in full swing as it continued with more music, glam and glee.
Samba school Unidos da Tijuca opened the festivities on Monday night with an afro-Brazilian religious theme, honouring Logun Edé, a deity of the Yoruba religion.
They were followed by Beija Flor de Nilópolis, who honoured their historical carnival director Laila, who died in 2021.
“Every year you feel the same butterflies in your stomach, anxiety, high expectations. If there were no butterflies in your stomach, it would be better to stop because it would not be fun anymore,” said Hugo Almeida, Master of Ceremony at Beija Flor.
Previously spread over two days with six samba schools per parade, the 'special group' as it is known now extends over three days, featuring four schools each night.
On Tuesday, four more samba schools will close the newly established third day of parading.
Rio's Sambadrome has been home to the parade since the 1980s, and is a symbol of Brazil's Carnival festivities.
