The Release of Snow Leopard Lingyu — Return of the Mountain Spirit
On the morning of March 2, 2026, the snow leopard Lingyu was released back into the wild
by the Qinghai Wildlife Rescue and Breeding Center.
Just days earlier, on February 24, the leopard was discovered near a building materials market by Beishan Mountain in Xining.
Examinations revealed a healthy young male, nearly four years old, measuring 94 centimeters in body length and weighing 35.5 kilograms.
Based on the surrounding geography and his age, analysis suggests the leopard likely traveled south along Beishan Mountain in Xining, exploring new territory or searching for prey, before accidentally wandering into the city.
His most probable origin is the foothills of the Qilian Mountains.
Approaching noon on February 24, the snow leopard was tranquilized and transported to the rescue center.
After five days of observation and evaluation,
the rescue center confirmed that Lingyu was fit to return to the wild.
On March 2, he was released into a sector of the Qilian Mountains, where wild snow leopards already have a natural population and where prey such as the blue sheep are abundant.
Together with the rescue center, we wish Lingyu well.
May he soon claim a territory of his own in the mountains—and one day raise cubs of his own.
Good luck, Lingyu.
