Randolph pulled out an amazing win over 4A Area 15 rival Westminster Christian holding the Wildcats scoreless in the final four minutes of regulation and all four minutes of overtime to grab a 53-51 win. Westminster missed their last 11 shots in the final eight minutes and both of their free throw attempts. Alex Kochanoski led the Raiders with 18 including four from three-point range. The Wildcats were led by Brady Wilson with 17.
Westminster led 33-21 at the half getting eight big points from Houston Scott in the first half and holding Randolph to only 6-28 shooting (21.4%) The Raiders outscored the Wildcats 20-10 in the third quarter to cut the lead to 43-41 heading to the final period. The Wildcats appeared to have the game well in hand building a 51-41 lead with 4:04 left on a three-point basket by Maks Leatherwood and held a 51-43 lead with 2:38 left. A rebound put back by Hayden Johnson cut the lead to 51-45 with 2:00 left. Randolph was able to hit a wide open three by Charles White after a Wilson was knocked down after missing a driving layup and unable to get back on defense cutting the lead to 51-48 with 1:50 left. After two quick fouls in the back court, the Raiders forced a turnover and quickly called timeout with 0:52 left still trailing by three, (51-48) Hudson Cloud hit a driving layup and was fouled with 0:38 left. Cloud hit the free throw tying the game 51-51. Westminster was unable to score on the final possession of regulation as Wilson’s 17-foot runner just missed sending the game into overtime. In the extra period neither team was very affective on offense as Westminster missed all 6 shots and two free throws and had a turnover. Randolph was only 1-4 with two turnovers, but Clouds step through made shot in the lane with 2:23 in overtime was enough to get the win for Randolph.
The win for Randolph (10-10, 4-3) puts them in a tie for the number 2 seed in Area 15 with Westminster (10-8, 4-3) as the teams split the season series with the Wildcats having won 71-39 on December 12th. The Raiders can take sole possession of the #2 seed with a win over Madison Academy on Tuesday, January 20th or a loss by Westminster at St. John Paul II next Tuesday. Westminster secures the # 2 seed with a win Tuesday and a loss by the Raiders. Madison Academy has already locked up the #1 seed and will host the Area 15 tournament.
