Reducing agent: A useful reagent for reducing organic compounds in nonaqueous solvents, such as aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, esters, and more. It's also used to reduce toxic metals into less harmful forms.
The most important reaction of NaBH4 is its use in the reduction of aldehydes and ketones to give alcohols.
Sodium borohydride is a selective reagent, meaning it's a weaker reducing agent than LiAlH4. It's relatively insoluble in ether solvents, so these are rarely used for borohydride reductions
Sodium borohydride is useful for the reduction of aldehydes, ketones, or acid chlorides in the presence of other easily reducible functional group.
Sodium borohydride, a representative borohydride reagent, behaves as an effective source of nucleophilic hydride in an aprotic polar solvent.
