This song is about the American runner John Carlos, who together with Tommie Smith stunned the world during the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City when they made a Black Power salute during the American national anthem.
Six years later, the Swedish socialist band Nationalteatern released this song about about the event and what happened to John Carlos, who finished third in the race, afterwards.
Mentioned in the lyrics:
John Carlos: American track and field athlete who finished third on 200 metres in the Mexico Olympics. You might think the song is about the winner at the top of the podium, but that was Tommie Smith.
Mr Brundage: Avery Brundage, American sports administrator and president of the International Olympic Committee from 1952 to 1972.
Crowns: Kronor, the Swedish currency. If John Carlos really sold interviews for 100 crowns in 1972, it´s the equivalent of 80 USD by the time this video was uploaded.
