IIT Student Deaths: Is Campus Pressure Part of the Problem? | Psychology Explained

Описание: Why are students at some of India’s most prestigious institutions struggling with severe psychological distress?

In this video, we examine the issue of student mental health and deaths by suicide at IITs through a psychological lens. Beyond individual factors, we explore how the campus environment, academic pressure, competition, expectations, social comparison, loneliness, perceived failure and institutional support systems can influence students’ well-being.

We will connect the issue with important psychological concepts such as:
• Stress and coping
• Achievement pressure and fear of failure
• Social comparison
• Learned helplessness and hopelessness
• Belongingness and social support
• Institutional and environmental factors
• Prevention and psychological interventions
The aim is not to blame students, families, faculty, or institutions, but to understand an important question:

When students are struggling, how much should we focus on the individual—and how much on the environment around them?

This discussion is especially relevant for UPSC Psychology Optional students, as it demonstrates how psychological concepts can be applied to contemporary social issues.
