If it was tiring for those, who waited hours to be able to greet the royal couple, for the royal couple itself that wed a day before in Punakha Dzong, it must have been even more tiring.
It's a three-hour drive from Punakha, the ancient capital, to Thimphu, the new capital.
Yesterday, it took the royal couple more than 12 hours to cover the distance, as they stopped along the way to meet people of all ages and backgrounds, lining the highway to greet and offer prayers and wishes to them.
The jubilant and excited crowd, eager to see the royal couple, had lit incense and built makeshift altars along the highway. Which is why the royal couple chose to walk and interact along stretches lined with thousands of well-wishers, and drive along those bereft of habitation.
In Thimphu, excited students lined the highway from eleven in the morning, holding the national flag in their hands under a bright blue sky.
As expected, hunger and thirst soon got to them after several hours. But they waited and excitement returned with news that the royal couple had finally descended to Semtokha at around four in the evening.
Being the most populous urban centre in the country, Thimphu had the longest lines of people, stretching from the Semtokha gate, through the town and all the way to Lingkana, all wanting to greet the royal couple.
But His Majesty stopping by to meet and interact with people is not something new. In keeping with what was done in the past, His Majesty has always found time to be with the people. From students to villagers to civil servants to those in the private sector, many have had an opportunity to interact with His Majesty.
Therefore, it was only natural for the people to want to come out and greet the King, and express their happiness and good wishes on the auspicious occasion of the royal marriage.
It is not for just any reason that His Majesty is known as the people's king. Yesterday was a perfect example of why it is so and will always be.
