“If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink… I am the Light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” (John 7:37, 8:12)

In John 7–8, the tension rises. The crowds murmur, the leaders plot, and the identity of Jesus becomes the dividing line. He speaks not as a mere rabbi, but as One sent by the Father—claiming authority over the Law, time, and even Abraham himself. These chapters bring us to the edge of a great unveiling.

At the Feast of Tabernacles, Jesus stands and cries out—not in secrecy, but in the open courts of the Temple—offering living water to those who believe. He is the fulfillment of the feast, the rock in the wilderness from whom water flowed (Exodus 17), the source of the Spirit promised in Isaiah 44:3. As the crowds debate whether He is a prophet or the Messiah, Jesus speaks of where He came from and where He is going—words few can comprehend.

Yet amid the rising controversy, a woman caught in adultery is thrown at His feet. “Teacher,” they say, “the Law of Moses commands us to stone such women. What do you say?” They mean to trap Him. But the Word who gave the Law stoops low, writing in the dust. “Let him who is without sin cast the first stone.” One by one, her accusers walk away. Jesus neither condones sin nor condemns the sinner. He shows mercy and calls her to holiness: “Go, and sin no more.”

From this act of mercy flows a new declaration: “I am the Light of the world.” The same voice that once said, “Let there be light,” now offers illumination to all who follow Him. But darkness resists the light. The Pharisees accuse Him of false testimony, misunderstanding His origin and rejecting His authority. Jesus tells them plainly: “You do not know Me or My Father… If you knew Me, you would know My Father also.” (John 8:19)

He speaks of freedom: “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” But they claim they’ve never been slaves—forgetting both Egypt and Rome. Jesus reveals a deeper slavery: bondage to sin. And only the Son can set them free.

Then, as the dialogue intensifies, Jesus drops the thunderclap:
“Before Abraham was born, I Am.”

With these words, He doesn’t merely claim to predate Abraham—He invokes the sacred Name spoken to Moses from the burning bush: “I AM WHO I AM.” (Exodus 3:14). This is no veiled hint. It is a proclamation of eternal being, divine authority, and oneness with the Father. The response? They pick up stones to kill Him. Not because they misunderstand Him—but because they understood Him all too well.

🕯️ Meditation
John 7–8 confronts us with a choice: Who do we say Jesus is?

To the thirsty, He offers living water.
To the guilty, He offers mercy and restoration.
To the seeker, He offers light.
To the enslaved, He offers truth and freedom.
To the religious, He is a stumbling block.
To the believer, He is the great I AM.

He does not fit neatly into our categories. He cannot be dismissed as a moral teacher. He claims what no one else ever dared: to be God in the flesh.

So come to the waters. Walk in the light. And fall at the feet of the One who was before Abraham and who still speaks today:
“I AM.”
