Number 1. Menopause isn’t an isolated incident. It has three phases, perimenopause, menopause, and post menopause. There isn’t even a test you can do to confirm menopause, which means you’ll be tracking symptoms for YEARS.
Which brings us to Number 2. The symptoms signalling menopause can last, on average, 7 years. This means for about a 10th of your life you’ll be experiencing a whole host of symptoms ranging from mildly inconvenient to absolutely debilitating.
Number 3. These symptoms vary person to person. You might experience none of them, or you might experience every single one. Often the most impactful are the hot flushes, night sweats, mood changes, and changes to your vaginal structure. The sleep disruptions can be absolutely life-altering, and not in a good way.
Number 4. During perimenopause, your periods will fluctuate in intensity, frequency, and duration. Eventually they’ll wind down. You’ll have hit menopause when you haven’t had a period for 12 months, but in the time leading up to that, you won’t be able to predict what your period will be like.
Number 5. Hormonal contraceptives don’t impact menopause – you will still go through it whenever your body is ready, but they may mask some symptoms.
Number 6. Very little research has been done around menopause and treatments. That means that we are still learning the best ways to cope with this natural biological process that affects every woman, trans man, and non-binary person assigned female at birth.
Number 7. Once you’ve passed menopause, you enter post menopause. You might think you’re out of the woods, but you aren’t. The drop in hormones makes you far more susceptible to osteoporosis and cardiovascular diseases.
Number 8. And since you’ll live about a third of your life post menopause, these increased risks are going to stick around.
Some menopause symptoms include:
Hot flushes and night sweats.
Body aches and pains, including sore breasts.
Memory changes.
Difficulty falling and staying asleep.
Dry skin that may feel itchy or crawly.
Exhaustion and difficulty concentration.
Vaginal dryness, burning, and/or irritation.
Loss of libido.
Increase in painful sexual intercourse.
Increased risk of urinary tract infections.
Chances in labial and vaginal physical structure.
Uncontrollable mood changes.
Anxiety.
Fatigue.
Irritability.
Unwanted hair growth.
Thinning of scalp and body hair.
