While studying abroad in Spain during her time as a student at San Diego State University, Lea Marie Dennis (’04) found a passion she wasn’t expecting food.
Tasting some of the most amazing things she had ever experienced, Dennis discovered her love for culinary arts. As an art student and an artist at heart, Dennis knew that once graduating, she wanted to find a way to pursue both passions.
After graduating from SDSU, Dennis became a private chef, and in 2012, she expanded her business to open a small boutique catering company. Cooking in houses during the day and running her catering kitchen early mornings, Dennis eventually earned the honor of catering for prestigious art organizations such as the San Diego Symphony, the San Diego Museum of Art, the Mingei International Museum, the Natural History Museum, and others.
Blending her two passions for art and cooking, Dennis started to fall in love with the way they were serving cookies at their receptions. It was an art of getting each recipe right, decorating each cookie, and stacking them in certain ways. It was something Dennis truly enjoyed.
And hence, Sugar Kiln was born. The name references the ceramic style kiln that glazes pottery, similar to how Dennis views her cookie-making skills. Known for delicious chocolate chip cookies and vegan and gluten-free options, Sugar Kiln has been a go-to for San Diego residents to purchase their cookies from.
This holiday season, Sugar Kiln is offering elegant gift boxes and signature cookie towers. Perfect gift for family members, friends, coworkers, or the most delicious treats to have at your next event.
