D&T Association CEO Tony Ryan outlines the factors that constitute real design and technology teaching to enable children to gain from the subject and design and make products that are valid and rewarding.
D&T provides a foundation for learning about the made world and includes important links to numeracy and literacy as well as allowing children to develop the skills and understanding to build confidence and succeed in many associated areas. It is important that schools meet the criteria of designing and making ‘Something, for Somebody, for Some purpose’ and don’t allow D&T to become a purely practical, craft subject.
This short video is one of a series being developed on aspects of teaching D&T in primary schools and is made freely available. Subsequent videos will be available for members of the Association only and will cover further aspects of primary D&T including:
