Are you considering a refugee claim in Canada or supporting someone through the process? This video breaks down the entire timeline, from the moment you first seek protection to the final step of becoming a Permanent Resident (PR). It's a multi-stage journey, and understanding the processing times for each step is crucial.
First, you will meet with an officer from IRCC or CBSA to determine if your claim is eligible to be referred. The processing time varies, but the initial appointment and referral can take months.
Then, your claim is sent to the Refugee Protection Division (RPD) of the IRB. You submit your Basis of Claim (BOC) form and evidence, and attend a formal hearing. This stage currently involves significant wait times for a hearing date, often taking one to two years or more before a decision is rendered.
If your claim is APPROVED by the RPD, you are granted "Protected Person" status and can then apply for Permanent Residence. This is a separate PR application with its own security, criminal, and medical checks, and it currently takes multiple years to finalize.
WATCH NOW to get a realistic view of the current processing landscape, learn what causes the longest delays, and contact our office if you need more clarification or are seeking representation.
