In the midst of growing national and international momentum around racial justice and equity within the philanthropic ecosystems, foundations are increasingly talking about building and transferring assets to global majority groups also referred to as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) communities.

As philanthropist Kat Taylor wrote in an essay where she committed a third of her assets to communities of color over her lifetime, “It’s time to return power—wealth, income, control, opportunity, and more—back to those from whom it has been taken. At the heart of what is needed is productive equity capital that empowers community control and ownership of assets within those communities.”

With this heightened awareness of the power dynamics of philanthropy, many funders have increased the hiring of diverse leaders, upped funding commitments to BIPOC communities, and launched new initiatives focused on racial equity. But with a few exceptions, philanthropic practice largely hasn’t kept pace with the rhetoric, as funders have struggled to truly transfer, share, and cede power to BIPOC groups.

We appreciate the remarkable Keynote Address on "Revolutionary Philanthropy" from our Beloved Brother Yonis Hassan, Executive Director of The Justice Fund.

Yonis has led reform campaigns and initiatives based on the notable premise that foundations across Canada have amassed over $120 billion in tax-payer assets, designated solely for charitable purposes.

Yonis has shared the importance of the philanthropic community playing a stronger role in addressing the inequalities that exist.

“We need significant philanthropic reform to ensure that this money is serving communities in need.”

“We need to practice trust-based philanthropy and re-think how we can support frontline organizations and accelerate our impact at scale.”
