When we solo over a dominant 7th chord there are almost endless harmonic possibilities.
But we need to start somewhere and no better place than the two sounds I want to share with you in this video.
1. Diminished
2. Whole Tone
Both these sounds create cool tensions over the dominant 7th chord and both the chords that help us form our lines fall right under our fingers when we play E7.
The Diminished shape for E7 os played at the 6th fret and we can slide it up and down every 3 frets for the same sound.
The 'whole tone' shape is formed from an E9#11 chord also at the 6th fret and we can slide this shape up and down the neck every 2 frets.
The idea is to first understand the concept of both of these chords/sounds then form licks and lines using the chords and shapes.
Ultimately we want to use our ear to mix the sounds up and create lines that sound cool in our solos!
