The philosophy of 29029 isn’t just about achievement. It’s also about vulnerability. Achievement is great, but it can be fleeting. Developing the ability to be vulnerable is lasting. It takes a deep sense of confidence and character to take a chance on yourself and try to do something extremely hard, where failure is a real potential outcome.

This weekend on Mont-Tremblant, 292 people did just that. They attempted to climb 29029 vertical feet in 36 hours. 81 of them had tried before and come up short. But that wasn’t the end of their journey. They committed to trying again, and in so doing tapped into something more powerful than winning and losing. They connected with a vulnerability that will serve them long after this event. In trusting themselves to try again, the journey became their story more than any finish line.

Rather than report on how many of them reached Everest this time (many did), we celebrate the simple fact that all of them were brave enough to give it a shot. Along with the other 200+ gritty, committed individuals they were climbing with, they formed a powerful community who pulled one another to the summit of this beautiful mountain.

As often happens, it wasn’t all beautiful over our 36 hours here. A storm ripped through on Friday evening and unleashed some serious conditions that soaked a good segment of the community and even knocked out power for a bit. But as we’ve become used to seeing, the extra difficulty only added a sense of drama to the journey and on we climbed.

In the end, 78% of participants reached Everest and a red hat. But the journey of every individual who stuck their neck out and put themselves in this extraordinary situation is what we’ll remember.
