The second day of the Hajj pilgrimage is underway in Saudi Arabia on Thursday, July 30, amid severe restrictions in light of the COVID-19 epidemic.
On this day, which falls on the eve of the festival of Eid al-Adha, pilgrims make their way from Mina to Mount Arafat where the Prophet Muhammad is said to have delivered the final sermon to the Muslims who accompanied him from Mecca to Medina. Following afternoon prayers, pilgrims will start descending Mount Arafat and make their way to the plain of Muzdalifah.
Normally attracting nearly 2.5 million visitors to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, authorities this year are reportedly only allowing a small group of around 1,000 to 10,000 individuals already present in the country to take part in the ritual, which is one of the five pillars of Islam that all Muslims are expected to complete in their lifetime.
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has registered just over 270,000 cases of coronavirus, according to Johns Hopkins University.
