India’s direct selling industry crossed Rs 19,000 crore in annual sales, growing 5.3% year-on-year for the year 2021-22, the Indian Direct Selling Association (IDSA) said in its annual survey. The industry, which includes Amway and Oriflame as member companies, grew to Rs 19,020 crores in 2021-22, compared to Rs 18,067 crore the previous year, the survey report said.
Despite economic and social challenges amid the pandemic that year, the sector emerged resilient, the IDSA said in a statement. It added that within associate members, wellness and nutraceuticals categories contributed 59% to overall category sales, followed by 22% revenue contribution by cosmetics and personal care brands.
Rajat Banerji, chairman, IDSA said: “India has been seen as a market that holds tremendous potential for direct selling. The contribution of IDSA member companies remains a healthy 55% of gross industry revenues.”
The number of active direct sellers stood at around 84 lakhs, growing 6% from 79 lakhs in 2020-21, the report said. It said the industry comprises 56% active male sellers, adding that the gender ratio changed in favour of male workforce from 2020-21.
