Day 9 of the announced Sept Core Update - day 2 of the product reviews update, yes that happened yesterday I heard about it late yesterday morning and been scratching my head since

I literally can not believe that this is even possible. But I have an idea - but let’s go through all the test data.

Today is a test day

You’re looking at the data log where I notate dates when New content is launched, and times when the index request made by Google Indexing API that I track the bots to see if they crawl the new content and then how long it takes for new content to go through the indexation system.

Today’s new content was published - everything went well - publish, request, and crawl confirmed.

And overnight we had the Pages Search Console Report update to Sept 19 - if you go to your GSC and select the Pages report you’ll see it above the middle frame on the right - they did that late last night -

Now Let’s look at the bots.

Yesterday was yet another day of continued low instances of bots that indicates another day of stasis - so not much here - move along I guess -

About the Product Review Update - it was announced on Twitter -
And they quickly followed up to say - we’re still rolling out the September Core Update -

S0 and I quote -

If you see a change and wonder if it's related to the core update or the product reviews update:
If you produce product reviews, then it's probably related to that.
If not, then it might be related to the core update.

So I put on my tin foil hat and thought -


And that brings me to how can two updates run at the same time and not “cross the streams” and potentially contaminate results? If something went wrong and it often goes a little too far - how would they know what caused it so that could correct for it?

If we know what we got hit by based on what type of content we produce -

Then maybe these Product Review updates aren’t typically what we think of as an update -

What if the Product review “update” takes place outside of the indexing and scoring portion of Google and works in the Serving Portion of the indexing process.

What if the product review update is really a filter? What if it’s a syndication filter? A filter that that tighten up or losen at will -

Those that know me know my favorite seo pet peeve is when SEOs use the term duplicate content when talking about putting the same content on different sites - but that’s not duplicate content issue which is the same content on the same domain - but more what happens with press releases - google sees all those press releases but they do not serve them in the index. They filter out typically all but two. Same thing for a domain there’s a limit of 2 pages can show in the served index

That could explain how they would have kept these “updates” separate and run them at the same time without contaminanting either.

How else could they say. You’ll know which update hit you because of what you market in -

If you produce product reviews, then it's probably related to that.
If not, then it might be related to the core update.

And this is the 5th time they are running content through the Product review update -

If it’s a filter - that makes sense - people are joking about what’s wrong Google you keep running this - can’t you get it right?

So while I’m not seeing any indication of the type of crawling we normally see - I don’t think the product review feature is a specific resorting - I think it’s a filtering out of syndication review and product descriptions.
