Okay. I’ve got tokens now.

That means food—if I want it. And more importantly, it means options. I still have extras, so I can afford to experiment before I actually eat. I also have a fork. Last time, a metal fork saved my life and got me out. I’m hoping history repeats itself.

I take the food, roll it into a ball, and hurl it straight at the fisheye camera.

Splut.

It sticks.

Of course it does. Just like sconto food always does—sticks to everything. I’ve used this stuff as putty before, patched holes in my apartment with it. It’s basically edible glue.

Moments later, Quince storms in, grabs his head, and stares up at the camera now completely covered in food.

I tell him I need my privacy.

He sighs, defeated. “Fine. Just don’t do anything stupid.”

He’s probably a good guy. But good guys don’t unlock doors. And I need out. If he won’t help me, I’ll help myself.

I use the fork to loosen the screws on the table. It’s bolted down, but not well. Now I can move it anywhere I want. First thought: can I hack the camera?

Before that, I drag the table under the vent and try prying it open with the fork. The vent is huge—big enough for me to climb through easily.

No luck.

The fork isn’t strong enough. I’ll need something sharper. Or hotter.

I start pacing. Camera. Light. Vent. Processor. Again and again. Nothing works.

Every time I try the light with the metal fork, I get shocked.

Hmm.

Insulation.

I tear a strip off the rubber sheet and wrap it around the fork handle.

Back to the light.

Yes.

It works.

I open it up and expose the lighting circuit. Now that gives me ideas. First one is simple: I set the paper on fire.

For a second, I consider running around the room waving burning paper, hoping to trigger a fire alarm. But no—that’s messy. Uncontrolled.

Instead, I drop the burning paper into the trash can.

A contained fire.

Warm. Steady. Useful.

I take some of the food and drop it into the cup with my wetware. Organic material. Fuel. Then I hold the cup over the fire.

Cooking wetware. Never thought I’d be doing this again.

It takes time. Almost two hours. But eventually, it works.

I’ve got good wetware now.

Active. Responsive.

Okay.

Now let’s see what I can really do.

Time to start hacking—processor, camera, monitor… maybe even the door.

And if I’m lucky?

Maybe the door security here is another stupid knight.
