Jag Cheema’s connection to Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi spans more than five decades and reflects a legacy defined by leadership, generosity and an enduring love for Islanders Athletics.
In 1965, Cheema joined the tennis program, stepping in for a teammate who returned home to compete for the Mexican Davis Cup Team. He graduated from UCC in 1967, becoming the first Indian student to attend and graduate from the university and the only Indian to compete for the tennis program at that time.
What began as a brief chapter as a student-athlete evolved into a lifelong commitment to the Island. Alongside his wife, Linda Cheema, he has remained deeply invested in the growth and success of Islanders Athletics. Their transformational support made possible the renovation of the university’s Athletics Field House weight room — now the Jag and Linda Cheema Sports Performance Facility — serving all 16 Islanders Athletics programs. In addition, the Cheemas established the Jag and Linda Cheema Endowed Scholarship in Athletics an endowed scholarship benefiting Islanders student-athletes, further ensuring that future generations have the opportunity to excel both academically and athletically.
Beyond their philanthropy, Jag and Linda Cheema have built lasting relationships with generations of student-athletes, frequently opening their home and offering mentorship, encouragement, and a sense of family. Those bonds have extended far beyond campus, reflecting a lifetime devoted to uplifting the Islander community.
For his distinguished service and unwavering dedication, Jag Cheema is proudly inducted into the Islanders Athletics Hall of Honor.
