Continuing our beach vacation from Miami, we decided to take a cruise to travel to the Caribbean paradise, Bahamas. The royal Caribbean cruise line’s Freedom of the seas was our choice of ship. This 4 nights and 5 days journey promised us the quintessence of the fun filled family cruising experience along with a glimpse of the beautiful Bahamas island life. We boarded the cruise ship from a dedicated terminal at Miami. Were we excited? Oh yes absolutely excited to sail in the turquoise and blue waters.
The mega ship had 15 floors in all complete with pools, water slides, rock climbing arena, casino, large theatre, numerous cafes, restaurants and lounges and a promenade full of shopping options. Our room was on the 9th floor and we had decided to stay in a suite room with a balcony that opened to the sea offering grand vistas at all times of the day. The room was compact, well-appointed and comfortable. But when you are on a cruise like this one, the idea is to spend as much time as possible outside the room, isn’t it?
We think one of the things that you shouldn’t miss out on while on a cruise vacation is the live entertainment shows such as musicals or dance performances or stand-up comedy acts. We were amazed at the elaborate set designs, the live acts and awe-inspiring dance performances are an absolute must watch.
On our 2nd day we went to Coco Cay, a private island of the royal Caribbean cruise line. Coco cay houses a number of beaches and the centre of the island has a large water park. We decided to give the other entertainment options a miss and decided to simply laze around on the beach sipping Pina coladas. The weather was just amazing and we spent many hours doing… well… absolutely nothing.
Evenings on the cruise are always a delight. The promenade on the 4th floor was always abuzz with carnival like atmosphere. There is something for everyone and every age group on the cruise ship. Whether you want to dance away the night or spend some quiet time listening to jazz or try your luck at the casino the cruise experience has it all covered for you.
On the third day we made a stop at Nassau, the capital island of Bahamas. This Caribbean paradise, consists of 700 tropical islands and islets. Situated about 50 miles from the east coast of Florida, Bahamian islands are an absolute treat for beach lovers. Pearly white sand beaches, spectacular coral reefs, mangroves, forests and beautiful historic towns that pretty much sums up the quintessential Bahamian experience. The port in Nassau is very close to the city centre, the administrative district and the tourist hub. We decided a go on a city tour that took us a rum cake factory where we got to taste a really really sweet yet potent rum cake. Queen’s staircase is usually on every tourist’s itinerary. This hand carved starircase made out of volcanic rock took 11 years of 1000s of men, women and children before it could be completed.
The colourful tourist district comprises of several unique restaurants and wineries from the colonial times. It a good stop if you wish to shop for some memory sakes and souvenirs from the island. We then went to John Walting’s Distillery where you can a take a tour of the rum factory and drink some more pica colladas or some other exotic rum cocktails.
4th day on the cruise was a sea day and we spent a lot of time by the pool and seaking in the jacuzzi that over looked the sea. Did you ask if we did all this sipping some more exotic cocktails? Absolutely yes.. is there any other way to enjoy a Caribbean holiday? Oh yes.. on most days we overate because mealtime is something that we always looked forward to. Menu was very well curated and service was impeccable. Sit down full service restaurants that served a proper 4 course meal to informal buffet restaurants to pizzerias.. we tried everything on this 5 day cruise vacation cum carnival aboard the freedom of the seas.
