Yes! However, we must analyze different phases of a criminal case to determine how this works:

Guilt/Innocence Phase:
During the guilt or innocence phase of a criminal case, the Jury or Judge is only supposed to consider the facts of the case, not your character (good or bad). Criminal Evidence rules exist that make it improper to present character evidence good or bad. If you do decide to talk about how good of a person you are, you take the risk of "opening the door" to both good and bad character evidence.

What do we mean by "open the door?" You can present good character evidence if judge finds relevant but make sure no skeletons in your closet because the moment you start talking about how good you are, the judge will allow the prosecutor to question about any past negative behavior. If you have any skeletons in your closet from your past, the jury will be allowed to hear it to judge your credibility.

Negotiations Phase:

What if your criminal attorney is attempting to negotiate your case? Being a good person can Make a big difference! If your criminal lawyer is able to show that you are a good person, the prosecutor will be more likely to offer a conditional dismissal or other result that would avoid jail time, conviction and a stain on your criminal record. How? Showing you are a good person in combination with being a first-time offender will create the perception that you are at little to no risk to re-offend in the future. If the prosecutor can relate to you, it is easier for your criminal lawyer to obtain a dismissal of your criminal charges.

Punishment Phase:

If you plea guilty or are found guilty by a judge or jury during a criminal jury trial, being a good person and having proof how behavior backing this up will help the jury see that you made a bad decision, and not an actual criminal.

For example, if this was a first-time arrest and you can provide proof of good conduct, this helps you avoid prison or jail time. This proof of good behavior can be established in court by the testimony of family, friends, co-workers, boss, etc. They can each testify about all the good things that you have done in life. For example, your boss can testify about your work ethic, honesty and how he is willing to extend your job to you, even if you have been convicted or plead guilty. This makes the jury believe in you!

What if you receive prison? Does being a good person matter? Yes! After a certain portion of your sentence has been served, your criminal attorney can request the court for shock probation. By showing you are a good person and good behavior, the judge would have the discretion to modify your sentence and allow you to serve probation, rather than the remainder of your jail or prison sentence.

Finally, good people get out of jail and prison faster! If you receive a prison sentence, good behavior almost always results in favorable consideration by the parole board. This result in a significantly earlier release from prison than someone who finds himself in constant trouble in prison during his sentence. Receiving parole and early release is directly tied to someone's good behavior, among other factors.
