Cell phone video of a February confrontation between a Muslim woman and an Elizabeth, NJ landlord has led to a state civil rights complaint against the landlord, the Attorney General's Office said Wednesday.
William Greda faces five counts and the potential of thousands in fines after state officials allege Greda told his would-be tenant that he doesn't rent to Muslims. A state investigator wearing a head scarf followed up on the initial complaint and alleged Greda refused to rent a basement apartment to her because she was a woman.
Outside the complex Wednesday, Greda told Chasing News he did not say what the state alleges and that the religion of his tenants is immaterial. Greda said he has had a Muslim tenant for three years but declined to make the man available for an interview.
Greda said he is seeking a lawyer for his required court appearance six months from now.
