This webinar looked to assess what lessons could be learned from the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh for the force planning of middle powers. Countries such as the UK and Germany, more so than great powers like the United States and China, are confronted by fiscal constraints when making choices about what new military capabilities to acquire in the near future, what existing systems can be phased out in the decade ahead, and how to effectively integrate the former with the latter. Therefore, the lessons taken from the recent Nagorno-Karabakh conflict may have greater relevance to policymakers among the middle powers.
Franz-Stefan Gady, IISS Research Fellow for Future Conflict, was joined by Gustav Gressel, Senior Policy Fellow with the Wider Europe Programme at the European Council on Foreign Relations’ (ECFR), Rob Lee, a PhD student in the Department of War Studies at King’s College London, and Michael Kofman, Director of the Russia Studies Program at the Center for Naval Analyses and a Fellow at the Kennan Institute, Woodrow Wilson International Center in Washington DC.
