An admissions or application essay, sometimes also called a personal statement or a statement of purpose, is an essay or other written statement written by an applicant, often a prospective student applying to some college, university, or graduate school.

Personal statement for college — an essay you write to show a college admissions committee who you are and why you deserve to be admitted to their school. It's worth noting that, unlike “college essay,” this term is used for application essays for graduate school as well.

Common personal statement prompts include:
Central aspect of your identity (activity, interest, talent, background)
Overcoming a failure.
Time you rose to a challenge or showed leadership.
Experience that changed your beliefs.
Problem you'd like to solve.
Subject or idea that captivates you.

University admission or college admission is the process through which students enter tertiary education at universities and colleges. Systems vary widely from country to country, and sometimes from institution to institution.
