Piano arrangement of Bernard Herrmann's main title, labelled "Prelude", to the 1960 psychological thriller PSYCHO by A. Hitchcock. This short, but very interesting piece showcases Herrmann's unique style of composing in small units of repetitive but rhythmically/melodically interconnected cells rather than developing long thematic lines. This mixture of minimalistic repetition and slight variation gives his music an agitated, almost hypnotic quality while at the same time remaining in the background of the audience’s attention while watching the film.
One of Herrmann's other trademarks – especially in his thriller scores of the 50s and 60s – is the use of the so-called “Hitchcock Chord” (R. S. Brown, 2008), a minor triad with an added major seventh. This dissonant harmonic structure appears throughout the Prelude in different musical cells. Even the very first chord is a Hitchcock Chord in B♭ in second inversion. Maybe you can spot more occurrences!
With this arrangement I tried to stay as faithful as possible to Herrmann's original composition while at the same time making it sound musically adequate on the piano. Another special characteristic of his Psycho score is the instrumentation: the entire score is written for large string ensemble only, without any brass, woodwinds, or percussion. Given this deliberate limitation of timbres, a piano arrangement seemed like the obvious choice to me, since it also works with only one timbre.
