Paul Newman took a new 1982 Nissan Skyline 2000 Turbo GT across a Florida ferry for a home-market (Japan) commercial. It was part of a series of promotions where Nissan brought over the Japan-only R30 Skyline to the USA and showcased Newman on the vast American roads... and it doesn’t get more wide open than having it out on some open water.
Since this video was done, the resulting commercial was found (here's the follow-up: • Paul Newman's R30 Skyline commercial on th... ).
This happened on the Fort Gates Ferry, a mile-wide crossing of the St. John’s River. It seems like an ideal location to connect with Newman’s racing history/promotions since it’s only about an hour’s drive from the Daytona International Speedway.
The ferry is also significant because it has a history that predates the existence of the United States. So there is some heartache in the video about what it needs today, but there’s also a lot of hope for the future.
The photos of Paul Newman on the Ferry are borrowed from the Florida Memory archives (State Archives of Florida).
