Rising in the East
You’ll see me on the horizon
Shimmering light
that brings life to the Earth

A hot glowing ball of gas I’m a star
93 million miles away from Earth, that seems far
It takes 8 whole minutes for you to see my light
But don’t look directly at me or you could burn your eyes

I’m made up of mostly Hydrogen and Helium
A yellow Dwarf Star whose size is about medium
I’m 4.6 billion years old that’s ancient to you
But as a star, my life is only half-way through

I am the one
That brings light to everyone

Did you know that I rotate very slow
And my center rotates faster than my poles
My equator region rotates about every 25 days
But my poles each take 36 days to rotate

I’m 865,000 miles wide
As wide as 109 Earths placed side by side
And when it comes to volume, I can hold a lot
It would take over a million Earth’s to fill me up

I’m a G2 V yellow dwarf main-sequence star
That includes my spectral type and luminosity class for you all
Though I’m not nearly the hottest type of star you’ll meet
I’m hot enough that you could melt and boil diamonds on me

I am known in every culture
I have so many names
Because I bring life to the Earth

I’m also called Sol, that’s where the word solar comes from
Like in the term solar system
Sol is the latin word for Sun
This name is used by many including the ancient romans

Many civilizations thought I was a God
Like In Egyptian mythology my name was Ra
I’m also called Helios – in Greek mythology
Like heliocentric, heliosphere, The God of the sun, you see

I formed from a solar nebula, a spinning cloud of dust and gas
That spun so fast it flattened out when its gravity made it collapse
Most of the matter formed me from this circumstellar disk
And as for the rest, the planets were born from this

I make up over 99 percent of all of the solar system’s mass
The gravitational pull is strong from this ball of gas
So strong that I pull and hold on tight to all the planets
Which causes them to all stay comfortably in my orbit

Planets asteroids comets moons and more orbit me
And I orbit the center of the Milky Way Galaxy
I’m located in one of the Milky Way’s spiral arms you see
It’s called the Orion Spur that’s where you will find me

I’m traveling through space at over 500,000 miles per hour
Even at that speed one orbit round the galaxy feels like forever
230 million years it takes to complete one trip around the Milky Way
This is sometimes called a Cosmic Year, they say

I may look just like a ball
But there’s much more that you don’t see
So much happening inside
To create my energy

I have many layers to tell you about
Let’s start from my inside and work our way out
My core is my center, the hottest part of me
Reaching temperatures of around 28 million degrees
Layer 2 is a little cooler called the radiative zone
Where Photon particles move energy, a process called radiation
The Tachocline layer is layer 3
Separating layers 2 and 4, its a border in between
Convective Zone layer 4 is the boiling plasma is in me
Bubbling outwards through the convection process transferring energy
My surface is The Photosphere, that is layer 5
You see it from Earth as a great sphere of light
The Chromosphere layer 6 thin and red where temperatures rise
Layer 7 transitions from Chromosphere to the outside
The Corona is layer 8 extending far out into space
only visible during a solar eclipse and hotter than my surface

My photosphere or surface isn’t solid like the ground
It’s made up of boiling plasma all around
I have millions of wild jets erupting from me all the time
Called spicules, these eruptions cover this surface of mine

I’m constantly emitting particles, these are called solar winds
When these winds hit Earth’s atmosphere they cause auroras to begin
I have sunspots on me, that come and go as they please
These are cooler regions on my surface that look darker you see

Other features of me that may interest you
My solar flares the most powerful explosions in our solar system its true
Energetic bursts of light triggered by magnetic energy release
Often followed by coronal mass ejections or CME’s

My glow comes from a process called nuclear fusion
I create huge amounts of energy converting hydrogen to helium
Eventually I’ll finish converting these elements of mine
When that day comes, I’ll be out of time

As the end nears, I’ll expand into a red giant star
I’ll engulf Mercury Venus and Earth, and almost reach Mars
Then I’ll shed my outer layers creating nebula display
And collapse into a white dwarf star until I fade away
