The Iranian warship IRIS Dena was sunk on 4 March 2026 in the Indian Ocean near Sri Lanka.
Reports say it was hit by a torpedo fired from a U.S. submarine during the escalating conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel.
Around 80–87 Iranian sailors were killed, while some survivors were rescued by the Sri Lankan Navy.
Another Iranian naval ship, IRIS Lavan, was already sailing in the region.
It developed technical problems and requested emergency docking.
India allowed it to dock at Kochi Naval Base in Kerala for repairs and logistical support.
Iran’s ambassador publicly thanked India, saying the help showed the long-standing friendship between the two countries and praised the “excellent coordination and cooperation” of Indian authorities.

Many sailors from the Iranian ships were later flown out of Kochi to return home.
Some remained temporarily while the ship stayed docked.
