Model - RS4 B7

Year - 2006

Colour - Mugello Blue

Spec - Black optics pack with Wing back bucket seats, front and rear heated seats,carbon fibre, flat bottom steering wheel, electric rear blind, satnav, 6 disc changer.

Modifications - Full Milltek cat back with gutted pre cats, Inlet runner flaps and head partitioners removed, pipercross panel filter, Mrc Stage 2 map Running 435bhp and 340lbft. Kw V3 coilovers, H&R Anti roll bars, Ispiri Isr10 9.5x19s with 20mm hubcentric spacers, 255 35 x 19" Continental sport contact 5p's

Welcome to the video of our Rs4 receiving the Project Customs treatment..

The usual time scale to turn around a high quality re spray including strip and refit, is in the rough region of 40 hours (allowed time) we aim to nail this in 20 hours....

first we spend 2 hours stripping the car for paint... door handles, bumpers, trims. mouldings, badges etc,
Then we pre clean the vehicle and remove any contamination,
Then we prepare the old paint and remove any damage back to bare metal, and fill as required. depending on the condition of the old paint, this is around a 2 hour process depending on the skill level of the painter/s involved.
Then its clean up time... clean it, clean it and clean it again with solvent based degreaser.
Once the vehicle is clean your ready to start the masking up process, how much time you spend on this process will certainly show on the final finish... if it isn't prepped... it wants masking. The time scale on this process is based on skill level, 2 hour process on average.
Now, clean it, clean it and clean it again with solvent based degreaser... This is the last chance you have to clean the prepared surface for paint. Any greasy finger prints or contamination will slap you round the face whilst painting, so no time for cutting corners... If there was a point in the cleaning process where you said "that will do" you need to go back there and clean it again.
Tack off!!! (a sticky rag) run over the prepared surface with a sticky tack cloth to remove any lingering bits of dust etc and your ready to paint.
Given any potential set backs, to get to this stage should be no less than an 8 hour job. few coffee breaks and abit of dinner should take you to home time. come back in the morning ready to paint with a fresh head...

Day 2..
Tack off!! again as dust through the night is most likely on the panel now.

Wet on Wet prime any bare metal surfaces and fade out where applicable,
1 full coat of basecoat (Mugello blue in this case) flash off..
2nd 80% coat of basecoat, flash off..
3rd and final coat is the drop coat, we drop the basecoat on to ensure the basecoat doesn't look patchy or stripy.

Mix up enough Clear Lacquer to hit with 2 wet coats more or less one after the other. Due to the size of the job, the first coat is already flashed off enough to hit with a 2nd by the time you've gone round the full car.

1 full almost finishing coat off lacquer, followed by a final finishing coat of lacquer.
allow to flash off for 10 mins and then bake for 40 mins at 65 degrees C.
this whole process including bake is roughly 2h 40mins.

After bake, de mask and re mask ready to polish the painted panels.
The finish was more or less how we wanted it, although we decided to push it a little further for even higher gloss levels.

polishing process start to finish in this scenario was 3-4 hours

we then put the remaining panels in the booth for paint.

another 2 hours paint with 40 min bake.

fit the panels and polish ready for refit.

Refit all the panels, mirrors, handles, door frames and badges
2 hour refit and line up.

job complete ready to drive away 19 hours 20 mins :)
