STORYLINE:
The remains of Odai and Qusai, the sons of the late Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, and his grandson Mostafa, reburied near the deposed leader's grave in his hometown a few miles south of Tikrit on Wednesday, according to tribal officials.
The bodies were reburied in Saddam's home village of Ouja, 130 kilometres (80 miles) north of Baghdad, where the former Iraqi President was buried 24 hours after his execution on December 31, 2006.
Sunni leaders of Saddam's tribe decided to exhume the bodies and move the remains Tuesday to the courtyard of the ornate building in which the ousted leader was laid to rest after he was hanged on Dec. 30 after being convicted for crimes against humanity.
Odai, 39, and Qusai, 37, and Qusai's 14-year-old son Mustafa died July 22, 2003, in gunbattle with U.S. troops in the northern city of Mosul and had been buried in the main tribal cemetery in Tikrit, 3 kilometres away, in the family plot in the main town cemetery.
''By God's will, bodies of Odai, Qusai and Mostafa were moved to the compound for religious ceremonies in the centre of Ouja near the martyrs, President Saddam Hussein, Barzan and Awad al-Bandr," said a resident.
Saddam was captured in an underground hide-out near Ouja on 13 December 2003, eight months after he fled Baghdad ahead of advancing American troops.
He was hanged to death amidst chaotic scenes on 30 December 2006 after he was convicted of killing 148 Shiite Muslims in Dujail after an attempt on his life there in 1982.
A tribal chief and three other relatives accompanied the bodies as they were transferred Tuesday in
three cars from the cemetery from the building in which Saddam is buried.
The three bodies were buried in the courtyard near the graves of Saddam's half brother and former intelligence chief Barzan Ibrahim, and Awad Hamed al-Bandar, former head of Iraq's Revolutionary Court, who also were sent to the gallows in January for their part in the Dujail killings.
The five burial mounds were covered with Iraqi flags as people prayed next to them during the service in Ouja.
