Girolamo Frescobaldi: Ave maris stella; Hanneke van Proosdij, baroque organ

Описание: Frescobaldi's Hymn (Hinno) Ave Maris Stella, from his splendid collection of keyboard music, Toccate e partite d'intavolatura, Libro 2, published in Rome in 1627 (R/1637). Performed on the baroque organ by Hanneke van Proosdi; HD video from the Voices of Music Venetian Christmas Vespers concert, December, 2013. The medieval chant Ave Maris Stella was used by composers from the middle ages through the baroque; Frescobaldi combines skillful counterpoint with just a few "blue notes" for his setting of the tune. Monteverdi used the hymn in his setting of the 1610 Vespers; Frescobaldi's version was printed just a few years before Grandi's Vespers of 1630.
In the first variation, the tune is sounded in stretto in the upper two voices. The second variation introduces the tune in the base and sets a countersubject against it, the countersubject is then used in imitation in each voice in turn. In the last variation (the third verse was omitted in this performance), the tune is used in imitation in the lower two voices, and a countersubject in imitation in the upper two voices. In this way, Frescobaldi provides each verse with a highly original texture while at the same time using the mode and subject of the cantus firmus to tie the music together. Frescobaldi preserves the Dorian character of the original chant by introducing the B Flat, C Sharp and F sharp as transient or cadential notes after the mode is well established, so that the harmonic structure swings back and forth from Dorian and D Minor.
