Smallholder farmers often do not get a fair price for their products due to limited market access and high transportation costs. Women farmers find it particularly difficult to trade fairly.
In response, FAO is establishing agricultural product aggregation centres in different parts of Cox’s Bazar to create new market opportunities for agricultural product by connecting farmers to markets.
An aggregation centre is a trading place for locally grown produce. A farmer is nominated as a market aggregator and organizes for produce to be transported to a centre. Traders from nearby and distant markets purchase produce in bulk from the market aggregators.
This initiative is expected to increase income opportunities for the local population, and at the same time, contribute to the food and nutrition security of both host and refugee communities
