🚨 FSSAI action doesn’t automatically mean “toxic”
The main issue highlighted here is whether the product contains the right amount of actual asafoetida.
🔍 Most perungayam we use isn't pure
Commercial asafoetida is generally compounded with ingredients such as starch and gums to make it easier to use and distribute.
🧪 Why does the alcohol test matter?
The test helps assess whether the compounded product contains a sufficient quantity of asafoetida.
A low result can indicate that the product is too diluted.
🌾 Too much starch = less asafoetida
If the permitted starch level is low but testing finds substantially higher amounts, the product contains more filler and less of the ingredient you're actually buying.
⚠️ The surprising part
A product can be free from harmful contaminants and still have a quality/composition problem.
Safe doesn't always mean it meets the required standard.
💡 The real takeaway
Understand what the violation actually is—in this case, the concern is about composition and quality, not necessarily poisoning.
