There have been all these books about people who are on their deathbeds and go to Heaven.

In one case recently, the author admitted he made it all up.

Still, if you're religious, you probably think Heaven is a great place. You live your life so that God will let you through the pearly gates.

But the problem is that, when you think about it, Heaven is a pretty horrible place to be. It's like New York City: I wouldn't mind visiting but I don't think I'd want to live there.

Here's why:

Playing a harp doesn't even seem like fun now. I can only listen to Joanna Newsom for so long...

Seeing your loved ones is great and all... but when I visit my parents or relatives in other states, I'm usually ready to leave after a day or two.

Given the people who tend to talk about it a lot, the lack of intellectual stimulation would get frustrating after a while...

It sounds like all you ever do is watch the people you left behind. Because they're always talking about how they know you're watching them from above... and that might be okay for a generation... but after a couple of generations, you're watching strangers. And that's weird.

Where are all the rebels? The artists who challenge and maybe offend you? The drugs? The sex? The alcohol? The things you're not supposed to do or enjoy that really make life worth living?

If all of that's in Hell, maybe we're all aiming to go to the wrong place. The party's going on in the basement.

I don't have any desire to be surrounded by suicide bombers who martyred themselves to be up there.

-- If Christians are right about unborn children going to Heaven, then it'll be me and 98% partially-formed fetuses. Not my idea of a good time.

Do I have to go to church in Heaven? Do I have to worship God all the time? I don't want to do either of those things now, even for like an hour... why would I want to do them for eternity?

Apparently, Heaven is just full of toddlers making a visit before they return back to Earth to get their book deals. Not my kind of crowd.

If anyone I really loved didn't make it to Heaven, I would be devastated. How could I enjoy my time up there if I knew my parents or kids or partner were burning in Hell? That sounds like torture, not bliss.

Part of why we appreciate life is because we all go through so many tough times. Sure, we take it for granted sometimes, but if you've ever had a runny nose, you know how good it felt when it was all clear again. If you've ever survived an accident, you know how good it feels when you're all healed.

In Heaven, there's no illness or pain or injury. It's just all good, all the time. And you can't appreciate that when there's nothing to compare it to.

You thought having sex was awkward in your parents' house? Just wait till God's your roommate.

The wifi connection is probably horrible. I couldn't deal with that.

Look: There's no Heaven. You have this one life. Go enjoy it. Don't stop anyone else from doing the same.
