The Fourth State Beyond Waking, Dream & Sleep

There is a state of awareness you touch every single day —
yet rarely recognize.
It is not waking.
It is not dreaming.
It is not deep sleep.
The ancient sages called it Turiya — the Fourth.
In the Mandukya Upanishad, consciousness is described through three common states:
• Waking (Viśva) – awareness turned outward
• Dreaming (Taijasa) – awareness turned inward
• Deep Sleep (Prājña) – awareness unmanifest
But beneath all three exists something constant.
Turiya is not another experience.
It is the unchanging witness in which all experiences appear and disappear.
It is described as the amātra of Om —
the silent, immeasurable substratum beyond sound, thought, and form.
You glimpse it:
In the gap between thoughts
In the stillness just before sleep
In the moment of waking before identity returns
That silent presence which simply is —
aware, yet not doing anything —
is Turiya.
It does not come and go.
Only attention moves away from it.
When recognition shifts from states of mind
to the awareness of states,
a profound clarity emerges.
Life continues —
but you are no longer confined to it.
This silent witness, untouched by change,
is not something you must attain.
It is what you already are.
Return to this stillness.
Rest as this awareness.
Simply be.
