The Casimir Effect is a quantum phenomenon where two uncharged conducting plates placed in a vacuum experience an attractive force due to quantum fluctuations.
In quantum field theory, even in a perfect vacuum, there are temporary fluctuations in the electromagnetic field, which create virtual particles and antiparticles.
When two metal plates are placed close together, they alter the quantum vacuum, restricting certain wavelengths of these virtual particles between them.
This leads to a difference in the quantum pressure on either side of the plates, resulting in an observable force pulling them together.
Unlike classical forces, the Casimir Effect arises purely from quantum mechanics, where the vacuum isn’t empty but instead teeming with fluctuations.
Although this effect is tiny, it has been experimentally confirmed and has significant implications for understanding the quantum world at small scales.
