Islamic Perspective on Music

The ruling on music in Islam is a matter of scholarly difference, with evidence often interpreted in different ways.

Some scholars consider music prohibited based on a hadith reported in Sahih al-Bukhari, where the Prophet ﷺ mentioned people who would make musical instruments lawful. They also refer to the Qur’an (31:6), where “idle talk” (lahw al-hadith) is interpreted by some early scholars as music that distracts from the remembrance of Allah.

Disliked or prohibited, if it promotes immorality or distracts from religious duties
