Delhi heatwave triggers massive fish death at Sanjay Lake in Trilokpuri

Описание: Delhi’s intense heatwave has triggered a major ecological crisis at Sanjay Lake in Trilokpuri, where hundreds of fish have reportedly died due to falling water levels and declining oxygen supply.

The 52-acre lake, managed by the Delhi Development Authority, has witnessed stagnant green water, exposed lakebeds and foul odour, alarming residents and visitors. Reports stated that the lake mainly depends on treated water supplied from the Kondli Sewage Treatment Plant, but recent pipeline leakages disrupted the inflow during peak summer conditions.

Environmental observers said reduced water circulation sharply lowered oxygen levels, creating fatal conditions for aquatic life. Cleaners reportedly removed nearly 2 to 3 quintals of dead fish within the last 72 hours.

The incident has also raised concerns about birds and other wildlife dependent on the lake ecosystem, with experts warning of similar crises in urban water bodies if climate-resilient measures are not strengthened.
