King John of England (1199–1216) was a controversial monarch whose reign shaped history. The youngest son of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine, he earned the nickname "Lackland" for lacking inherited lands. His military failures lost England its French territories, like Normandy, while heavy taxes fueled unrest. In 1215, rebellious barons forced him to sign the Magna Carta, a cornerstone of constitutional law. Infamously, he lost the crown jewels in the Wash in 1216. John died that year, possibly of dysentery, and was buried in Worcester Cathedral between saints Wulfstan and Oswald, leaving a legacy of strife and reform.
