The opportunity to share a full-time business school experience with classmates who come from over 40 other countries, bringing their own expertise whether in finance, marketing, technology or operations, proved to be an irresistible combination for Grace Huang, an MBA student at the Cambridge Judge Business School.
With a BA in English Broadcasting and Journalism and MA in Public relations from the Communication University of China in Beijing, Grace Huang worked in Hong Kong for two years at Orange Sky Golden Harvest Entertainment, the world's premier Chinese language film company, before returning to Beijing to coordinate financial leasing for business jets.
She was attracted to Cambridge Judge for her MBA not only because of the strong economic ties between the UK China, but also the combination of an 800-year academic history that mixes tradition with the latest developments in technology. The college system has enabled her to share dinners with undergraduates and PhDs alike, and as she rows on the river Cam at sunrise she is reminded that many great figures from history, from Sir Isaac Newton to John Maynard Keynes, that have shared the same setting.
One of the highlights of her studies has been the Global Consulting Project (GCP), working with four other MBAs to apply their knowledge and skills in the real world on an important management issue that the host organisation would like investigated. She sees such projects as a valuable learning experience, and feels that the interaction with students from so many different cultures will be beneficial in her future career working in the Chinese private equity sector.
For Grace, the return on investment from her studies at Cambridge Judge is both professional and personal. She has learned to understand every aspect of a business, from finance to operations. But more than that the one-year break from her career has given her the chance to think about her life path. "It is not just about working at a consulting company or earning a higher salary. Many of my fellow students are already VPs or own their own companies. They want to broaden their mind, and explore more opportunities. If you focus on the same industry you are limited in your circles, so you need a chance to jump out and look into your life, the whole economy, to find other areas of interest. You will harvest a lot from this year - it is a once in a lifetime experience."
