Imagine paying for something every minute, even when no work is happening. That is the real story behind the cost of a minute in the Indian Parliament, and it shocks most people when they first hear it. Every single minute inside Parliament costs Indian taxpayers about Rs 2.5 lakh, which means an hour costs Rs 1.5 crore, and a full working day costs Rs 6 crore. This money goes into salaries, building maintenance, security, and many other essential expenses needed to run our democracy.
But here is the real issue. When Parliament does not function, the cost does not stop. In the 2025 Monsoon Session, Parliament was stalled for three full days. The bill for those three wasted days was Rs 23 crore. If you look back in time, the first Lok Sabha met for 135 days. The 17th Lok Sabha met for only 55 days. The gap shows how much productivity has fallen and how much public money is wasted.
The cost of Parliament reminds us that democracy is not cheap and disruption is not free. Every minute wasted delays development and affects ordinary citizens.
